About the Artist

Growing up in Bradford, within a Nigerian household which is located in the Caribbean neighbourhood of West Bowling, Nicholson’s early musical experiences were rich and diverse. At home, he was surrounded by countless Afrobeat records as well as Motown, funk and soul. This was contrasted by the high-energy music he was exposed to at his childhood youth club which mainly consisted of early 90s jungle, ragga and hip-hop. Throughout his teenage years, he was part of a small grime collective consisting of five MCs and a DJ who would record long sets on cassette tapes, rapping over grime and hip-hop instrumentals which they then distributed around school. After a short period of exploring guitar-based music, he eventually formed a live hip-hop and soul band Normanton Street in Brighton in 2011. The band organised a lot of their events and would need a DJ. Learning how to mix on a pair of old CDJs that were constantly set up at the band's house, Nicholson was able to spend hours exploring how to naturally shift to and from the different aforementioned genres whilst maintaining a certain energy throughout. In 2018, his record label QM Records began NAWA!, a monthly Afrobeats club night that showcased both artists and DJs.
